Memories in Progress

Chapter 1

January 2014

*Pittsburgh, PA*

Nick smirked a bit as Lulu glanced down at her watch. He'd seen her do it at least four times in the last half hour.

"Lulu," he said, leaning in closer to her. The noise in the restaurant was so loud it was hard to even hear his own words, much less make someone else understand them. "You, uh...You wanna go?"

She looked up quickly, furrowing her brow. Damn...was she that obvious? "No...No...I just..." She sighed, feeling her shoulders relax as she felt his warm hands caressing them. "I'm sorry. I just..I can't stop thinking about the kids. I mean, we really don't know very ,much about that sitter."

"Right. I mean, those six references we called...twice..each.". He smiled at her as she cast her eyes downward, embarrassed. "It could have all been a scam."

"I know...I know. I'm being crazy. I just miss them.". She looked up at him blinking innocently.

Those eyes got him every time. "I love you," he whispered, helping her with her coat and walking with her towards the door.

He chuckled softly. His life had changed so much in the last ten years. For one, he smiled a lot more. For another, he had a lot more to smile about. Anne had brought more joy into their lives than he could ever imagine. Three years ago, they'd welcomed Christopher, and three months ago, Ella had surprised them all.

Nick Fallin was a father--a husband--and perhaps even more shocking, a happy, happy man.

"It better be a lie," Dinah groaned, walking out of the bathroom slowly. Forcing a smile, she lifted the sheets, sliding beneath the covers and allowing Shayne to lay the cool rag on her forehead.

"What better be a lie?" he asked softly.

"That stupid saying...that whatever you do on New Year's, you'll do all year long." She paused, hearing Shayne snicker a bit. "Yeah, you laugh....you haven't been getting acquainted with a toilet bowl all evening."

"I know, babe. Is there anything I can do for you?" He lifted her hand, kissing it gently as he held it against his chest.

"I think you've done quite enough," she managed, barely able to keep her lips from curling into a smile.

"Awww, come on...just think about this time next year.". He smiled as he watched her eyes sparkle. Tightening his arms around her, he felt her move in closer.

"They'll be three of us," she smiled, closing her eyes as she laid her head-on his chest.

*Paris*

"There isn't anywhere else in the world I'd rather be right now," Joey softly whispered, pressing his lips against her temple.

"Really?" Kelly turned slightly, looking at him. "Are you sure? You're not sorry we didn't go out? I mean it is New Year's."

"And what better way to spend it than with my two favorite girls?"

"I swear you are the sweetest man," she sighed, looking back down into the crib. "You know, I could stand here and just watch her for hours."

"I know," he said,"It's so hard to believe that this perfect little thing is actually ours. After everything we've been through...to end up here is just..."

He looked down into the crib, reaching down and covering Kelly's hand with his own, "It's like I'm in a dream"

Kelly smiled leaning back against him. "It's not a dream though....this is our life."
